Happy Pride Month! Here is a Catch Up of this Past Week in New Providence and Some of the Many Exciting Things Going On and Upcoming in our Community:
- Last Friday we celebrated the life work of our wonderful Marjan Nirou Saniee, whom we miss so much, and Artist Bob Hill with our New Providence Public Art Committee and with family and friends. The Public Art Committee has brought much joy to our community. We are so grateful for their good work. We will always fondly remember our friend and neighbor Marjan, her art, her vision, and her legacy.

Happy Pride Month! Here is a Catch Up of this Past Week in New Providence and Some of the Many Exciting Things Going On and Upcoming in our Community:
– TODAY Friday June 3, 2022 is National Gun Violence Awareness Day to honor and remember all victims and survivors of gun violence and to encourage all citizens to support efforts to reduce gun violence. Anyone can join this campaign by wearing orange in support. The color orange was chosen because hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters when out in the woods and orange is a color that symbolizes the value of human life. We support National Gun Violence Awareness. End Gun Violence!
– Memorial Day Monday began with a Memorial Service in Veterans Park to honor, respect, remember, and thank those that gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom and way of life. Our Memorial Parade along Springfield Ave followed to the delight of all! Pedro Lopez was the Parade Grand Marshall and Honoree. The American Legion then hosted free hot dogs and refreshments.

Mayor’s Community Update: May 27, 2022
Words can not even describe the thoughts of the horrific pain and senseless tragedies in Buffalo, NY and in Uvalde, Texas. We stood in a moment of heartbroken silence at our 5/24 council meeting, and then read a proclamation committing our community to National Gun Violence Awareness Day coming up on Friday, June 3rd to honor and remember all victims and survivors of gun violence and to encourage all citizens to support efforts to reduce gun violence… No child, no family, no educator, no one should ever have to fear or endure this kind of senseless tragedy. Our hearts break for these families. Please hug your children and your loved ones. Please pray for these families who will forever have to endure what has happened. Please be rest assured that your safety and our children’s safety is our first and number one priority, and we will continue to do all we can, fully committed, to keep our community safe and prevent these atrocities. We stand strong fully committed against gun violence. May these victims never be forgotten. May their loved ones left behind find healing, peace, and comfort. May nothing like this ever happen again. Continue readingBorough Council Recognizes June 3rd as Gun Violence Awareness Day

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – With a sad coincidence the Borough Council issued a proclamation to recognize National Gun Violence Day at its Tuesday, May 24 meeting just as news of yet another school shooting spread across the nation. Mayor Al Morgan led a moment of silence to honor the victims of both the Texas school shooting and the May 14 Buffalo supermarket shooting.
Morgan noted that the proclamation is not about the Second Amendment of the Constitution, but about the dangers of illegal guns in the hands of mentally ill or dangerous people. The council fully supports the nation’s constitution, he said.
“Every day, more than 110 Americans are killed by gun violence, alongside more than 200 who are shot and wounded, and on average there are nearly 16,000 gun-homicides every year. Americans are 26 times more likely to die by gun homicide than people in other high-income countries,” Morgan read. There are approximately 439 gun-deaths in New Jersey every year. A majority of gun homicides and assaults are concentrated in cities. New Providence is working to end senseless violence with evidence-based solutions to protect public safety.

But it was after and all last night when the weight and full gravity of what has happened really took hold. I couldn’t sleep. I watched the news in utter disbelief. How could something so horrific in this day and age happen again? No child, no family, no educator, no one should ever have to fear or endure this kind of senseless tragedy. Our hearts break for these families. Please hug your children and your loved ones. Please pray for these families who will forever have to endure what has happened. Please be rest assured that your safety and our children’s safety is our first and number one priority, and we will continue to do all we can, fully committed, to keep our community safe and prevent these atrocities. What a great week in the Borough! Here is a catch up of this past week in New Providence and some of the many exciting things going on and upcoming in our community:
– We had a spectacular day in the neighborhood last weekend beginning with the Our House, Our Run (4K Run 2K Walk) and Fundraiser at Hillview School to raise money to support the adults with disabilities served by Our House, followed by the Historical Society Annual Craft Fair and Garden Club Plant Sale at the Salt Box Museum. Special thanks to John Elliott and CBS New York for all the coverage of our wonderful community. Here are a few of the places, including our Salt Box Museum and a few of our wonderful small businesses that he visited. NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The New Providence Historical Society placed the second historic marker in town. This marker has been installed in front of the former Academy School building and Borough Hall, and is currently leased by Peapack Private Wealth Management. Placed on April 30th by the Department of Works (DPW), it is the first in the town to include photos on both sides of the marker.
On one side, the former 1870 Academy School is pictured. The other shows Old Borough Hall. A description of each building is next to each image, bringing historical context to this marker.
“When people are walking around, they can learn a lot of history, more than people realize,” said Mayor Al Morgan.
Continue reading23rd Annual Our House, Our Run Hits New Providence Streets

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – After two years without a live run, the Our House, Our Run returned to the streets of New Providence for an in-person event. Saturday’s event marked the 23rd annual Our House, Our Run 4-mile run and 2-mile walk to raise money to support the adults with disabilities served by Our House.
As the morning fog was lifting, sounds of Katrina and the Waves “Walking on Sunshine” could be heard with motivators leading a group stretch. Even CBS News correspondent and personality John Elliott got into the act, as he was seen across New Providence promoting the #BetterTogether campaign.
“I have been volunteering and helping the event for years,” said Elliott. “CBS has a new campaign called ‘Better Together’ and they are encouraging us to participate, so I will be running with the residents.” The segment aired live Saturday morning on CBS News.
Volunteers helped with arts and crafts, handing out food and water, and spread awareness about Our House and the crucial services they provide to adults with disabilities.
