Mayor’s Community Update: June 3, 2022

Happy Pride Month! Here is a Catch Up of this Past Week in New Providence and Some of the Many Exciting Things Going On and Upcoming in our Community:

– TODAY Friday June 3, 2022 is National Gun Violence Awareness Day to honor and remember all victims and survivors of gun violence and to encourage all citizens to support efforts to reduce gun violence. Anyone can join this campaign by wearing orange in support. The color orange was chosen because hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters when out in the woods and orange is a color that symbolizes the value of human life. We support National Gun Violence Awareness. End Gun Violence!

– Memorial Day Monday began with a Memorial Service in Veterans Park to honor, respect, remember, and thank those that gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom and way of life. Our Memorial Parade along Springfield Ave followed to the delight of all! Pedro Lopez was the Parade Grand Marshall and Honoree. The American Legion then hosted free hot dogs and refreshments.

– We remember and honor New Providence resident George Robert Hutchinson, who gave his life in service during the Vietnam War. He was our only Pioneer (graduated in 1965) who died in service to our country, and hopefully our last. His memorial is in our Veterans Park.

– Along with our Assemblywoman Michele Matsikoudis, we warmly welcomed the New Jersey Veterans Network to New Providence on Memorial Day at the American Legion. Our Assemblywoman Michele Matsikoudis is a New Providence resident and also a Board Member of the New Jersey Veterans Network. New Providence supports our Veterans!

– Thank you to our New Providence Recreation Department, American Legion Post #433, all our dedicated volunteers and participants for such a wonderful Memorial Day!

– Our Hometown Hero Veteran’s Banners were hung for Memorial Day. Here are our banner locations in town: https://www.newprov.org/2022/05/hometown-hero-banner-map. Thank you to our DPW for displaying them and to Lisa Barfield from Clear Point Designs: Marketing & Design for printing them. Thank you to those who have served our country. We honor and remember all who have given the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless America!

– The New Providence Community Pool is open. If you haven’t already, you can register for your 2022 membership at www.nppool.org

– This week, New Providence EMS participated in a MVA drill during the high school’s Every 15 Minutes program. E15M is a two-day program focusing on high school juniors and seniors, which challenges them to think about driving while drunk and the impact of their decisions. Thank you to all the agencies involved and to the New Providence Municipal Alliance for the program!

– The New Providence Police Department is hiring full-time Police Officers! Information can be found on policeapp.com and newprov.org/employment. Interested parties can also email hiring@nppolice.org. New Providence Police and New Providence Office of Emergency Management

– Utility Upgrades are continuing around the Borough. Please continue to expect some delays and detours. We continually communicate on our end with the utility companies to find out when/where they are coming and continually inform them of best times (least traffic disruption) and paving schedules etc. Despite our best efforts the utility companies unfortunately are often not always the best at keeping us informed when/where they will be working or for how long. Please be patient while this important work continues.

Library:

– It’s time for our annual Community Art Show! This year, the theme is The Art of the Mask and they have some wonderfully creative work featuring masks of all kinds. Please stop by to see the art! The Art of the Mask is on display for June and July.

– Our New Providence Memorial Library needs your help to drive and develop their strategic plan. The strategic plan will be developed to guide the Library over the next three years. This is your opportunity to be heard and provide your thoughts and feedback.  Use the QR code to take the survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NPMLPartners.

Public Art:

The Public Art Committee recently installed a new sculpture in Harmony Park (which is adjacent to Veterans Park on South Street) titled Green Sculpture by artist Richard Pitts. It is a beautiful addition to our town. Please go take a look!

Westfield Board of Health May 2022 COVID Report—New Providence

  • This week’s map shows all regions in the state in high activity.  Statewide, daily cases are 21% lower than last week but 40% higher than a month ago.  It does seem as though this wave has peaked as New Jersey’s rate of transmission is now 1, meaning the cases have leveled off.
  • Statewide, daily immunizations averaged 7.9K a day (down from 12.2K a day four weeks ago).  80.8% of all NJ residents 5+ are fully vaccinated.  113 vaccinations were given by the health department during the month of May.
  • Information on vaccinated residents can be found on the COVID dashboard: https://www.nj.gov/health/cd/topics/covid2019_dashboard.shtml
  • This week, New Jersey saw a daily average of 3,845 confirmed cases (up from 3,621 cases four weeks ago and 1,332 cases eight weeks ago) and 11 average daily fatalities (up from 8 four weeks ago and 7 eight weeks ago).  New Jersey has the 7th highest confirmed cases per capita (did not change since last month).  Union County had an average of 226 cases reported a day the past two weeks.  Statewide, New Jersey had 928 hospitalizations reported today, which is the highest number in three months.  Overlook reports 26 hospitalized patients with COVID for the week of May 26th.
  • This week we will be pre-ordering vaccine for those under 5 years.  We anticipate being able to start immunizing this age group by the end of June.
  • The health department continues to provide vaccinations.  Residents can also book appointments online by visiting westfieldnj.gov/vaccine-appointments or by calling 908-789-4070.  Home visits continue to be offered as well.
