Mayor’s Community Update: May 20, 2022
What a great week in the Borough! Here is a catch up of this past week in New Providence and some of the many exciting things going on and upcoming in our community:
– We had a spectacular day in the neighborhood last weekend beginning with the Our House, Our Run (4K Run 2K Walk) and Fundraiser at Hillview School to raise money to support the adults with disabilities served by Our House, followed by the Historical Society Annual Craft Fair and Garden Club Plant Sale at the Salt Box Museum. Special thanks to John Elliott and CBS New York for all the coverage of our wonderful community. Our New Providence Police Department (New Providence Police and New Providence Office of Emergency Management) was recognized by the 200 Club of Union County for their heroic actions during Hurricane Ida September 1, 2021. That awful storm swept through our community causing horrific conditions. Several of our finest worked heroically and saved lives. Our most sincere thanks, gratitude, and congratulations to:

– Happy National EMS Week (May 11th-17th)! Our New Providence EMS held a very nice EMS Community Social Event this past Wednesday. We are so grateful to our incredible New Providence EMS! They are the kindest and most caring people you could ever know. Thank you for a nice event and thank you for your selfless good service to our community. Our EMS members are volunteers who continue to go above and beyond, attending almost all community events and activities, doing all they can to keep our community members safe. We are so grateful for their good service to our community.
-Along with our Council President Nadine Geoffroy, I attended the Gateway Chamber of Commerce Dinner this past Thursday. Gateway Chamber of Commerce represents all of Union County. We get together to honor and share our respective towns. Thank you to the NJ Sharing Network for sponsoring our table. It was a really nice event.
– Residents are eligible to order another batch of free home COVID-19 tests from the Federal Government. This shipment will include up to 8 tests. To order 8 more free COVID test kits: https://special.usps.com/testkits
– Online appointments are now available for COVID-19 vaccinations administered by the Westfield Health Department on select Fridays from 3:30-5:30 at Westfield Town Hall. Primary, secondary, and booster doses are available: https://www.westfieldnj.gov/vaccine-appointments
– Utility upgrades are continuing around the Borough. Please continue to expect some delays and detours. We continually communicate on our end with the utility companies to find out when/where they are coming and continually inform them of best times (least traffic disruption) and paving schedules etc. Despite our best efforts the utility companies unfortunately are often not always the best at keeping us informed when/where they will be working or for how long. Please be patient while this important work continues.
– The next Brough Council Meeting is this Tuesday May 24, 2022 in Council Chambers Borough Hall.
– Our Memorial Day Parade will be back in-person along Springfield Ave on Monday May 30th 10am in cooperation with the American Legion Post #433. For more details or if your group is interested in marching this year please email recdept@newprov.us or call (908)464-4430.
– Our Next ‘Chat with the Mayor’ is Friday June 3rd 6:30pm-8pm in the Lincoln Meeting Room Borough Hall.
–Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library are sponsoring a FREE Jazz Concert: Jazz Club with the Amazing Music of Abe Ovadia on Sunday June 12th at 2pm : https://www.newprovidencelibrary.org/…/jazz-guitar…
– Our Annual Freecycle-Fest Event hosted by our Sustainable New Providence Committee will be held on September 17, 2022 (rain date Sept 18, 2022) at the New Providence Community Pool parking lot from 8am – 3pm. This is an opportunity to bring unwanted items to a central location in New Providence for “recycling” with other families. In the past this Freecycle Event has been held simultaneously with the Green Fair. However, the two events will be held on separate dates this year. Thank you to the Sustainability Committee for their good work on this for our community.

Bulk Collection occurs once a year in June. Items must be placed at your curb by 2 AM on the designated Monday for your Zone. May is Mental Health Awareness Month:
– Our Borough Council appointed a new committee at our recent Borough Council Meeting on Tues 5/10/22: The New Providence Mental Health Advocacy and Education Committee. This new committee is spearheaded by Council President Nadine Geoffroy and Councilwoman Lisa McKnight, New Providence Borough Council.
-The committee mission statement: “The goal of the committee is to reduce the stigma of mental health within the community by promoting understanding through education, advocacy, raising awareness and connecting people to resources to get them hope and help.”
-The committee has several objectives and projects they will be working on including a lawn sign promoting mental health awareness. The lawn signs are available for $20/each. Please email Nadine Geoffroy at ngeoffroy@newprov.org. The committee is also partnering with the high school and will be handing out green ribbons to students. The borough poles will also be decorated with the green ribbons in recognition of Mental Health Awareness.

Diversity:
-May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month). This is an annual celebration that recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States. This year, the Federal Asian Pacific American Council has established a theme for the observance of AAPI Heritage Month “Advancing Leaders through Collaboration”.
-Our Diversity in New Providence, NJ Committee has a very special AAPI Cultural Event planned: Asian Intergenerational Day program to strengthen the bond between high school volunteers and Asian American seniors this Saturday May 21st 9am-11am at Szechuan Delight 598 Central Ave. Please RSVP to cdai23@newarka.edu. They are also posting daily on their social media pages sharing some of the many historical and interesting facts about the many AAPI influences including cultural food, and, fitness and wellness culture, including yoga, martial arts, and acupuncture.
-In partnership with the City of Summit, Summit Free Public Library Chinese Club, Summit YMCA,Berkley Heights Diversity Council, and Springfield Unity Project, our Diversity Committee will be hosting a FREE AAPI EVENT this Saturday May 21st 3pm-7pm at the Village Green located at 356 Broad Street in Summit. This event will also include a Holi Celebration. Everyone is invited to attend to celebrate and learn about AAPI culture. – In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, New Providence Recreation Department and the New Providence Diversity Committee invite you for FREE Qi gong classes.
